How Often Should You Clean Gutters in Florida?
In Florida, clean your gutters at least twice a year, once in late spring before the June-through-September storm season, and once in late fall after leaf drop. If your roof sits under oaks or pines, plan on a check every season instead.
Why Florida gutters clog faster
Florida's afternoon storms drop a lot of water in a short window, and everything the wind carried onto your roof that week goes with it, oak leaves, pine needles, palm debris, shingle grit. A half-clogged gutter that would limp along fine in a drizzle overflows in minutes in a real downpour, dumping water straight against your fascia and foundation.
Pine needles are the worst offenders: they mat together into a felt that water won't pass through, and they slip past cheap screens. Oaks drop constantly, not just in fall. If either one hangs over your roof, twice a year won't be enough.
The signs you've waited too long
You don't need a ladder to know. During a hard rain, look for water sheeting over the gutter edge instead of running to the downspout, a downspout that trickles while the roof is pouring, or gutters visibly sagging under the weight of wet debris. Plants growing out of a gutter mean it hasn't been cleaned in a long time, there's soil up there now.
What clogged gutters actually cost you
The gutter itself is rarely the casualty. Overflowing water rots the fascia board behind the gutter, stains and rots soffit panels, erodes the soil at your foundation, and in Florida, standing water in a clogged gutter is a mosquito nursery. Fascia and soffit repairs cost far more than years of cleanings, we replace a lot of fascia that a $0 look-over would have saved.
Cleaning vs. fixing the real problem
If your gutters clog constantly, cleaning more often is treating the symptom. Two upgrades solve it at the source: gutter guards matched to your gutter size, which keep debris out while letting water through, or upsizing the gutter itself, a 7-inch gutter sheds Florida rain that overwhelms a 6-inch. Both are conversations we have at a free estimate, standing in your yard, looking at your actual trees.
